Back during the time of the Civil War, women had much less rights than men. For example, they were not allowed to join the military. Still, many women dressed up as men so they would be able to fight in the war. Many of the female soldiers joined the army to make more money or to be with loved ones. They also took advantage of having male rights. Women traveled, played cards, and even voted. Back then it was somewhat easy to get away with being a woman in the army. Women were sometimes found out while being medically treated. On average, women got more promotions than men and were really good fighters.
The author, Veronica Majerol, wrote this article to show that women were an important part of the Civil War even though men get most of the glory. Some themes that are shown in this article are gender equality and women rights. Majerol backs up her claims with many interesting facts and detailed visuals, like photographs, paintings, and a timeline. She also provides many statistics. For example, 14% of women got promoted in the army compared to 11% of men.
After reading this article, I realized that what happened during the Civil War happens all the time. Women are looked down upon and are thought of as weaker than men, but then women still always find a way to prove society wrong. Men have always had more rights and privileges than women. Even today men make more money on average than women. Women joining to fight in the war is a big symbol of how determined females can be!
